Industrial Sociology

Course objectives:
Drawing attention to the non-technical aspects of work and work organization. Selected topics from the field of sociology of work and sociology of organization are presented.
Student responsibilities:
Grading and evaluation of student work over the course of instruction and at a final exam:
Seminar 30%, midterm exam 70%, or, if a student does not pass the midterm, then a written exam 70%
Methods of monitoring quality that ensure acquisition of exit competences:
Shorter discussions on the held lecture. Key terms mastery check. Explaining part of the subject matter. Evaluation of the lectured subject matter and teaching methods. Oral consultations with students.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to (learning outcomes):
After the successful completion of the subject and passing of the exam the student should be able to: - determine the modalities of work and leisure in the matrix of contemporary types of employment - describe elements of Beck"s political economy of insecurity - concisely express in written form their thoughts on the engineering aspect of social responsibility in economic activity - interpret the basic elements of ethical action in the workplace - identify the elements of the popular and the scientific approach to work related stress - combine the appropriate elements of communication with modes of participation in teamwork - analyze types of leadership in given examples of organizational activity - name the types of conflict at work and industrial conflict; explain and distinguish the modes of their resolution

5. Culture of work ethics - between ideology and reason; sociological and historical contextualization
6. Social responsibility - from organizational social environment toward intra-organizational issues

8. Work socializations - organizational conditions and posibilities, vocation and presentation of self; organizational norms, and ideology
9. Ethics in the workplace - age discrimination; workers with special needs; workplace surveillance; sexual harassment
10. Sociological aspects of work stress - popular discourse and a scientific construct; individual therapy and organizational change
11. Communication in organizations - interaction and communication; communication and power; types of communication; communication networks
12. Democracy and participation - sociological aspects of leadership and team-work
13. Conflicts in organization - its origins; types of industrial conflicts; patterns of conflict resolution
14. Sociological aspects of contemporary organizational sub-models - relatively autonomous work groups; quality circles; lean prodiction
