ENGINEERING DESIGN EDUCATION FOR A CHANGING WORLD

Abstract

This seminar will explore the cycles of economic and technological development undergone by society and their impact on engineering education.  Important patterns of economic, technological and structural transformation, such as Kondratiev long waves and energy transformations, will be described, and it will be argued that the challenges of resource constraints and the impacts of pollution require urgent adaptation of programmes of engineering education based on expansion of design, life cycle and systems thinking.  The curriculum for such a programme will be explored.
