Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture stems from the Higher Technical School founded in 1919, which in 1926 grows into the Technical Faculty of University of Zagreb. The Library of the Technical Faculty was founded in the same year. In 1956 the Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture departments of the Technical Faculty merged to form a separate Faculty of Mechanical and Naval Engineering with the associated Library. In 1967 the Faculty of Mechanical and Naval Engineering and the Higher Technical School merged to form todays Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb by the decision of the Parliament of Republic of Croatia.

Higher Technical School's book collection was added to the Faculty Library.

Faculty's students and members of staff are the primary users of the Library. External users do not have the right of borrowing books but can use the collection in the area of the Library and have the right to copy materials.

The oldest book in Library's possession is a rare work in the field of technical mechanics. It is G. A. Bückler's Theatrum machinarum novum published in 1673 in Nürnberg. The book has 44 pages of text (gothic) and 154 pages of etchings (copper-plate engravings). The book is bound in pig skin parchment.
